Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese near Florence (Italy) where his father was the local magistrate. A few weeks after his birth, his family moved to Florence. As an architect, Michelangelo pioneered the Mannerist style at the Laurentian Library. At 74 he succeeded Antonio da Sangallo the Younger as the architect of St. Peter's Basilica. Michelangelo change the plan, the western end has been finished to Michelangelo's design, the dome being completed after his death with some modification.
In 1505, Pope Julius II summoned Michelangelo back to Rome and commissioned him to design their own tomb of Julius. Because at that time there was a dispute between Julius and Michelangelo, and the many demands on the artists, the project was never completed. Nevertheless, Michelangelo still managed to produce a sculpture of Moses for the tomb.
