A short history of Michelangelo Buonarroti
Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475 in
Caprese near Florence (Italy) where his father was the local magistrate. A few
weeks after his birth, his family moved to Florence. In 1488, Michelangelo an
apprentice to the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio.Dia then living in households
Lorenzo de 'Medici, the main patron of art in Florence.
After the Medici were expelled from Florence,
Michelangelo went to Bologna and then in 1496 to Rome. The first work of
sculpture in the early years is the 'Pietà' (1497) made his name as a more
famous sculptor. Eventually he returned to Florence where he made the sculpture
'David' (1501-1504).
Michelangelo considered the greatest living artist in his
lifetime, and since then he has been considered one of the greatest artists of
all time A number of his works in painting, sculpture, and architecture rank
among the most famous. There His output in every field during his long life was
amazing;. when the sheer volume of correspondence, sketches, and memories that
survive is also taken into account, he is the best-documented artist the 16th
century. Two of his most famous works, the Pieta and David, were sculpted
before he turned thirty. Despite the low opinion the painting, Michelangelo
also created two of the most influential works in fresco in the history of
Western art: the scenes from Genesis on the ceiling and the Last Judgment on
the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. As an architect, Michelangelo
pioneered the Mannerist style at the Laurentian Library. At 74 he succeeded
Antonio da Sangallo the Younger as the architect of St. Peter's Basilica.
Michelangelo change the plan, the western end has been finished to
Michelangelo's design, the dome being completed after his death with some
modification.
In 1505, Pope Julius II summoned Michelangelo back to
Rome and commissioned him to design their own tomb of Julius. Because at that
time there was a dispute between Julius and Michelangelo, and the many demands
on the artists, the project was never completed. Nevertheless, Michelangelo
still managed to produce a sculpture of Moses for the tomb.
